Loan program designed to assist local nonprofits

Northern Nevada HOPES, a community health center in Reno, faced a brief federal funding freeze that threatened its mission of providing care to anyone, regardless of their ability to pay. The freeze was ruled unconstitutional, but the Trump Administration’s plan to claw back money for causes like diversity, equity, and inclusion still poses a threat. In response, Eaton Dunkelberger, CEO of the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada, collaborated with Sierra Pacific Credit Union to create a program that provides “cash flow smoothing” for local organizations in case federal grants are interrupted again. This innovative solution would help nonprofit organizations continue to provide critical services in the Truckee Meadows.

The county relies heavily on nonprofits to deliver essential services, such as the Nevada Cares Campus, which is operated by Volunteers of America with federal funding. The recent funding freeze caused concern among clients about access to services, highlighting the importance of a local safety net. Although uncertainty remains at the federal level, Northern Nevada HOPES remains committed to supporting healthcare for all, with CEO Sharon Chamberlain emphasizing the organization’s dedication to accepting new patients.

The collaboration between the Community Foundation and Sierra Pacific Credit Union demonstrates a proactive approach to safeguarding the services provided by nonprofits in the face of federal funding challenges. This partnership could serve as a model for other communities facing similar threats to social services. Despite the ever-changing landscape of federal funding, local organizations like Northern Nevada HOPES are determined to continue their vital work in the community.
