Amanda Gorman, Poet and Children’s Book Author

Amanda Gorman, who gained fame with her inaugural poem for President Biden in 2021, has now released a children’s picture book titled “Girls on the Rise” aimed at empowering young girls. The book, illustrated by Loveis Wise, emphasizes the importance of community and allyship, showcasing the power of girls when they work together. Gorman, who became the first National Youth Poet Laureate in 2017, continues to use her platform to inspire and uplift the next generation.

Despite her success, Gorman faced challenges when her inaugural poem was restricted in a Florida school in 2023. She expressed concern over the growing trend of book bans targeting authors and characters of color and the LGBTQ community, emphasizing the importance of representation in literature. Gorman believes that when children see themselves reflected in stories, they can imagine and pursue their own dreams.

Drawing inspiration from iconic figures like Maya Angelou and Martin Luther King Jr., Gorman sees herself as a wordsmith and change maker. She aspires to use her voice to promote love, legacy, and connection in her quest for social change. Gorman, who may consider running for president in 2036, hopes to leave a lasting impact by empowering others through her poetry and activism.
