Proposed Nevada Legislation Seeks to Give Power to Bullying Victims and Ensure Accountability for Bullies in Schools

A bill in the Nevada legislature aims to address bullying in schools by allowing parents of both victims and bullies the option to change schools as part of disciplinary action. Currently, only victims can request a school change. The proposed Assembly Bill 48 would prevent both students involved in bullying from being moved to the same school. Supporters believe this new approach shifts the burden from victims to bullies and empowers victims by not making them feel like they are running away. However, concerns have been raised about the clarity of the bill and at what point in the disciplinary process this option would be utilized. Assembly Education Committee Vice Chair Reuben D’Silva, the bill sponsor, acknowledges the need to define the criteria for bullying incidents that warrant a school change. Parents like Anna Marie Binder, whose son experienced bullying, see the bill as a positive first step but stress the importance of better communication and support for parents reporting bullying. The bill’s first hearing is scheduled for February 18.
