The Nevada County Arts Council, in collaboration with Nevada County, has launched Art in Public Spaces, a program that features quarterly displays at the Rood Center in Nevada City. The latest exhibit, titled “We Are Not Strangers Here: African American Histories in Rural California,” was unveiled with an opening reception attended by 50 guests this week. The exhibition explores the little-known history of African Americans in rural California, dispelling myths about their relationship with natural environments. The exhibit, curated by Susan D. Anderson, showcases historical photographs, timelines, and text to highlight the contributions of Black individuals and communities in California. The exhibit will be on display for free until April 18, with a lecture by Anderson scheduled for March 20. The exhibit aims to shed light on the forgotten history of African Americans in rural California and challenge myths about their presence in the state. It serves as a reminder of the important civic accomplishments and contributions made by Black Californians throughout history.
