OpenAI, known for its artificial intelligence technology, is expanding its operations across the U.S. by building a network of massive data centers. The company, in partnership with Oracle and Softbank, is investing billions of dollars to support AI development. President Donald Trump has praised the initiative, calling it a vote of confidence in America’s potential.
OpenAI is currently scouting locations in 16 states, including Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, to set up these data centers. The company is looking for sites with access to essential infrastructure like power and water. While the project aims to accelerate AI development, it raises concerns about the environmental impact of using vast amounts of energy.
Some tech giants have started using renewable energy sources like wind and solar to power their data centers. OpenAI’s proposal, however, does not specify its plans for clean energy. The company is aiming to build between five to ten campuses, depending on their size. This move marks a shift from relying on Microsoft for computing needs to establishing its own data centers.
