10 Passengers Aboard Overdue Plane in Alaska: Search Underway

A plane with 10 people on board, including nine passengers and a pilot, went missing en route from Unalakleet to Nome, Alaska. The Bering Air Caravan flight was reported overdue to Alaska State Troopers, prompting a search by the Coast Guard and ground crews. Poor weather conditions hampered air operations, so a C-130 Coast Guard plane flew over the area with equipment to detect people and objects. Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage also provided flight support. Ground crews searched along the coast from Nome to Topkok, but the exact location of the missing plane remained unknown. Bering Air Director of Operations David Olson reported that the flight took off from Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. The Coast Guard lost contact with the plane when it was 12 miles offshore. Unalakleet is a small coastal community on the western coast of Alaska, while Nome is approximately 141 miles to the northwest. The search efforts continue until the missing plane is located.
