Lt. Gov. Stavros Anthony held a rally to celebrate girls and women in sports while addressing the topic of trans athletes participating in female sports teams. The event, which had about 50 attendees, took place indoors due to safety concerns related to an anti-Trump protest outside. Anthony’s rally follows the creation of a task force aimed at protecting women’s sports after a UNR women’s volleyball team protested against the participation of transgender women.
President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order banning transgender women from competing in female sports, a move supported by rally attendees. The event featured speakers wearing “Protect women’s sports” T-shirts and included two young athletes sharing their experiences competing against what they believed to be biologically male players.
Republican lawmakers, including state Sen. Carrie Buck and Assemblymember Bert Gurr, are proposing bills to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports. Buck’s Senate Bill 112 would allow trans athletes to compete in co-ed teams, while Gurr’s legislation is still in development.
Meanwhile, Democratic legislators such as State Sen. James Ohrenschall are pushing for legislation to protect the transgender community, including a shield law to safeguard those seeking gender-affirming care in Nevada. However, concerns have been raised about the lieutenant governor’s task force and its use of state time and resources.
Overall, the issue of trans athletes in women’s sports has become a prominent topic in Nevada’s legislative session, with conflicting viewpoints on how to address the issue while ensuring fair competition and inclusivity for all athletes.
