The Streamlining Thermal Energy Through Advanced Mechanisms (STEAM) Act, reintroduced by Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), aims to expedite permitting for geothermal projects in previously studied areas. Reps. Susie Lee (D-Nev.) and Celeste Maloy (R-Utah) introduced a companion bill in the House. Geothermal energy is seen as a sustainable and water-neutral method of energy production, with the potential to create jobs and lower energy costs.
Industry leaders have praised the bill, noting its potential for innovation and development in the geothermal sector. However, some are concerned about the impact on Nevada’s groundwater resources, with a bill introduced in the state legislature addressing unintended water consequences of geothermal energy. If enacted, the bill would require a review from the state engineer. Despite these concerns, geothermal energy is seen as a key component of Nevada’s energy potential. The Bureau of Land Management also approved measures to speed up permitting for geothermal projects, highlighting a push for renewable energy development in the state.
