A planned memorial for Sade Robinson, a 19-year-old woman who was killed and dismembered after going on a date with the man charged in her murder, at Warnimont Park in Cudahy was scrapped due to a “flurry of racist emails” received by a Milwaukee official. The memorial, costing $7,000 of taxpayers’ money, was withdrawn following discussions with Robinson’s mother, Sheena Scarbrough, as they felt it was best to avoid the hatred surrounding the issue. The accused, Maxwell Anderson, was arrested weeks after Robinson’s disappearance and has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, and arson. Despite the horrific nature of the crime and the desire to honor Robinson’s memory, it was determined that taxpayers should not bear the cost of the memorial. County Supervisor Juan Miguel Martinez expressed disappointment at the racial animosity and discrimination directed at Robinson’s mother during this difficult time. Additionally, Milwaukee County Supervisor Felesia A. Martin criticized the racist emails and expressed disappointment with the current state of society’s acceptance of overt prejudice and hate. Moving forward, Martin hopes to find a more appropriate and sensitive way to honor Robinson’s memory without inadvertently causing further distress to the community.
