White House sends reminders to Elon Musk that his power is not unlimited

Elon Musk, a tech billionaire and special government employee, has been reminded by the White House that his power is not unchecked despite his authority to slash spending and reorient the federal government. He has been told to report to White House chief of staff Susie Wiles. Musk has acknowledged Wiles as the leader of the team at the White House.

Despite having broad latitude to make changes, Musk still needs approval from President Trump for his actions. Musk and Trump speak regularly, with Musk being deferential to Trump. Musk and his team, some without government experience, are treating the federal government like a private company to downsize and modernize it. Musk has access to sensitive government databases and is working to persuade federal employees to take deferred resignations.

Musk’s efforts include shutting down an entire federal agency, the U.S. Agency for International Development. He has also moved to exert more control over the government’s technology infrastructure. Despite his early success disrupting the federal government, some officials within the government feel that Musk is running it. Concerns have been raised about the influence Musk has and the potential consequences for those who oppose or criticize him.

The Justice Department, with key ally Ed Martin, is preparing to go after those who publicly identify the engineers working on Musk’s DOGE efforts. The actions of certain individuals targeting DOGE employees are being investigated for potentially violating federal laws. Musk has warned against interfering with his efforts on social media.
