The VA Medical Center in North Las Vegas is pioneering a new form of testing that looks at a veteran patient’s DNA profile to determine which medications are best for them. This personalized approach, known as pharmacogenomics or PGx testing, aims to provide doctors at VA Southern Nevada Health Care with valuable information to make more informed prescription decisions. By analyzing genetic makeup, the test can help predict how individuals will respond to certain medications, reducing the risk of adverse reactions or side effects. Specific genes known to react to certain medications are taken into consideration, making it a valuable tool in prescribing medications for conditions such as cardiovascular issues and gastrointestinal problems. Clinical Pharmacist Jenny Casiello commented on the benefits of the testing, particularly for high-risk medications. The PGx test is a simple blood test that is fully funded for veteran patients through the end of the year. Veterans interested in learning more about this groundbreaking testing offered by the VA can find more information on the US Department of Veterans Affairs website.
