Madilyn Cole, a prosecutor in the Clark County District Attorney’s office, has dropped her mother’s maiden name “Leavitt” as she seeks appointment to the Las Vegas Municipal Court bench. Cole, a finalist for the vacancy created by Judge Cynthia Leung’s retirement, is up against Amanda Pellizzari, a private attorney and Matthew Walker, a deputy city attorney. Cole, a BYU graduate, has been a law clerk and has been with the DA’s office since 2018. The City Council is set to choose the new judge on Wednesday. Cole recently changed her voter registration to reflect that she now resides in the City of Las Vegas as required by city law. Despite facing complaints for using a political endorsement in her campaign last year, Cole defends the endorsement from the Nevada Republican Club Action PAC, stating that it does not violate judicial canons. The PAC’s purpose is to support conservative candidates for public office. Cole maintains that the endorsement does not fall under the definition of a political organization based on the Judicial Code. The story was updated to reflect Cole’s voter registration in the City of Las Vegas.
