China retaliated against the U.S. by imposing its own 10% to 15% tariffs on American products as a 10% U.S. tariff on all Chinese goods took effect. China will implement additional tariffs on coal, liquefied natural gas, crude oil, agricultural machinery, automobiles, and pickup trucks starting Feb. 10. The Chinese government accused the U.S. of violating World Trade Organization rules and damaging economic cooperation between the two countries.
In response to the tariffs, China also announced an investigation into Google for anti-trust violations, export controls on rare earth elements, and added companies like Illumina and PVH Corp. to a restricted list. President Trump announced the tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico over the weekend, with the Canadian and Mexican tariffs being paused for 30 days after talks with their leaders.
The U.S. tariffs on China have been referred to the World Trade Organization by Beijing to protect its rights and interests. China criticized the U.S. for violating WTO rules, unilateralism, and trade protectionism. The U.S. has been blocking appointments of judges to the WTO, leaving it unable to mediate trade disputes. However, China could still sue the U.S. regarding the tariffs to gain international support against them. The Chinese government condemned the U.S. for undermining the rules-based trading system and disrupting global industrial and supply chains.
