Nevada’s Official State Tartan Honors Scottish Heritage

Nevada, known for its desert bighorn sheep and desert tortoise, also has an official state tartan that pays homage to the state’s Scottish heritage. Designed in 2001 by Las Vegas resident Rick Pawlowski, the tartan features colors that represent various aspects of the Silver State.

The blue in the tartan symbolizes Lake Tahoe and the Mountain Bluebird, while silver represents the state mineral and the Sierra Nevada’s granitic composition. Red reflects the red rock formations in Southern Nevada and the Virgin Valley Black Fire Opal, while yellow represents sagebrush and Central Nevada. White signifies the state’s name, meaning “snowy” in Spanish.

The tartan also includes four blue lines representing Nevada’s main rivers and 64 small boxes representing the year 1864, when Nevada gained statehood. Thirteen intersections symbolize Boundary Peak, the state’s highest elevation.

Pawlowski began working on the tartan after noticing other states had official patterns at a Highland Games event. After presenting the design to Sen. Harry Reid and then-state Sen. Dina Titus, legislation was carried to make the tartan official.

The tartan, woven by a Scottish weaver, is now worn by groups like the Las Vegas Pipe Band and the Nevada Society of Scottish Clans. Products featuring the tartan are available for purchase online and at the Nevada legislative gift shop.

The tartan serves as a symbol of pride and celebrates Nevada’s cultural and diverse history. Its registration with the Scottish Register of Tartans solidifies its place as a recognized emblem of the state’s Scottish heritage.
