Stavros Anthony of Nevada creates task force to prevent transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports

Nevada Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony has announced the formation of a task force focused on preventing transgender women and girls from participating in women’s sports. The task force, named the Lieutenant Governor’s Task Force to Protect Women’s Sports, aims to create fair competition for the sexes by banning biological men from playing in women’s sports.

The task force, chaired by former college athlete Marshi Smith, plans to promote policies that prioritize fairness, protect women’s safe spaces, uphold opportunities for women, and preserve the integrity of competition. Members include Sen. Carrie Buck and Assemblyman Bert Gurr, among others.

This initiative comes after the University of Nevada, Reno’s volleyball team forfeited a game due to the presence of a transgender player on the opposing team. The task force plans to host town halls and rallies to spread awareness and gather opposing views on the issue.

However, LGBTQ advocacy groups have criticized the task force as an attack on transgender individuals. They argue that youth sports participation should be available to all students, regardless of gender identity. The issue of transgender athletes in women’s sports has also garnered national attention, with more than half of states having legislation or state rules banning transgender women from participating in sports aligned with their gender identity.

Despite the controversy, it is unclear how many transgender student-athletes participate in Nevada sports. The task force’s proposals may face difficulties becoming policy due to the Democratic-controlled Legislature and state Equal Rights Amendment protections. Nevertheless, the issue remains a focal point in ongoing debates surrounding transgender inclusion in women’s sports.
