Nevada’s Republican governor urges Democratic-controlled Legislature to prioritize compromise over politics

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, a Republican, called for collaboration with the Democratic-controlled state Legislature to address urgent issues such as affordable housing and health care access. In his address in Carson City, Lombardo emphasized the need to work together and set aside partisan politics to find solutions for the challenges facing the state. He announced plans to restructure the state Department of Health and Human Services to improve access to health care and create a new agency, the Nevada Health Authority. Lombardo also expressed his desire to work with President-elect Donald Trump to bring more affordable housing to Nevada.

Lombardo, who is up for reelection next year, highlighted his efforts to expand school choice, increase teacher pay, and diversify Nevada’s economy. However, the state Democratic Party criticized him for failing to address rising costs for Nevadans and vetoing bills that aimed to tackle issues like housing affordability and education.

The state Legislature in Nevada meets every other year, with the 2025 session set to begin on Feb. 3. Lombardo’s call for collaboration and his plans to address key issues in the state demonstrate his commitment to advancing his policies despite being outnumbered by Democrats. As Nevada faces challenges in various sectors, the governor’s willingness to work across party lines could pave the way for bipartisan solutions to benefit all residents.
