The Nevada County Arts Council and Nevada County Libraries are hosting the Poetry Out Loud County Championships at the Eric Rood Center on February 5th. High school students from various Nevada County schools will compete in reciting poems, fostering public speaking skills and confidence. Funding for the program is provided by the California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Winners of the county competition will have the opportunity to compete at the state and national levels.
Teachers have seen the positive impact of Poetry Out Loud on students’ engagement with language and self-confidence. Participants are judged on their memorization, recitation, and understanding of the poems they choose. The finalists will also have the chance to recite their poems at the Sierra Poetry Festival in April. The festival aims to provide opportunities for youth to connect with poetry and grow through workshops and readings.
Youth are encouraged to attend the festival free of charge to enjoy the mainstage readings and participate in various events throughout National Poetry Month.
