Former Reno High School student, Kailiana Ramos, is one of nine women suing Western Oregon University’s women’s basketball team, seeking $28.2 million in damages. The lawsuit alleges that head coach Jessica Peatross and assistant Demetrius Marlow physically and emotionally abused players during the 2023-24 season. The players claim they were subjected to excessive and unreasonable amounts of exercise, disparaging comments about their bodies, and punishment for sustaining injuries.
Ramos played her first year as a junior on the team after transferring from Cal Poly Humboldt. The team had a record of 10-13 and 3-15 in the conference last season, with a player vote to forfeit the final six games. Despite allegations, Peatross and Marlow remain as coaches this season.
The lawsuit describes the university’s investigation into the allegations as a “sham” and claims only four out of 12 players who complained were interviewed. The players allege they were dismissed from the team and lost their scholarships after complaining about the mistreatment.
The lawsuit calls for the firing of the coaches, reinstatement of the players if still enrolled, university training on abuse prevention, and counseling for current and former players. The players want to ensure player safety through an independent monitor for a minimum of two years.
The university responded with a commitment to promoting student well-being. The players are represented by lawyers Jason Kafoury and Shenoa Payne. Two players have already settled claims against the school, while the rest continue their fight for justice. Western Oregon is set to play Western Washington University despite the ongoing legal proceedings.
