Professional rock climber Alex Honnold, known for his historic free climb of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, has made Las Vegas his home and is advocating for the protection of public lands. Honnold, along with Congresswoman Susie Lee, spoke at Red Rock Canyon about the importance of preserving access to outdoor spaces. Red Rock Canyon is a popular rock-climbing destination with over 2,000 routes.
Honnold highlighted the importance of outdoor recreation for the community and visitors from around the world who come to enjoy the mountains. Lee, who has climbed with Honnold, championed the Protecting America’s Rock Climbing (PARC) Act, which aims to protect climbing routes on public lands in 28 states. Additionally, the Biking on Long Distance Trails (BOLT) Act, co-sponsored by Lee, will create 10 long-distance bike routes across the country.
With Nevada’s outdoor recreation industry generating $8.1 billion annually, these laws are crucial for preserving and expanding outdoor opportunities. Lee encourages people to contact her office with suggestions for the multi-state bike routes as they work to identify suitable trails.
