Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford is part of a legal challenge against President Donald Trump’s birthright citizenship executive order issued earlier this week. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, argues that birthright citizenship is protected under the Constitution’s 14th Amendment. Ford, along with 18 states and other entities, believes that Trump’s order violates the Constitution and would harm Nevada by causing a loss of federal funding and denying basic rights to individuals.
Trump’s order questions whether the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to all persons born in the United States, excluding certain individuals from automatic citizenship based on their parents’ immigration status. The 14th Amendment has a history of debates regarding birthright citizenship, with key cases such as Wong Kim Ark’s in 1898 establishing that birthright citizenship applies to individuals born in the country.
Ford stressed the importance of upholding the Constitution and protecting individuals’ rights, stating that stripping citizenship from people born in the U.S. is not a solution to fixing the immigration system. He plans to continue the legal battle against Trump’s order for as long as necessary. The Associated Press contributed to this article.
