AI technology reveals genetic factors and possible treatments for Parkinson’s disease

Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic Genome Center have successfully used advanced artificial intelligence models to study Parkinson’s disease. By applying a systems biology approach, they identified genetic factors in disease progression and potential FDA-approved drugs that could be repurposed for treatment. This breakthrough could lead to the development of disease-modifying therapies for Parkinson’s disease, providing much-needed options for millions of people worldwide.

The study’s lead, Dr. Feixiong Cheng, is an expert in systems biology and has developed AI frameworks for identifying treatments for various diseases, including Alzheimer’s. The team’s integrative AI model allowed them to identify genes affected by noncoding genetic variants associated with Parkinson’s disease, some of which are known to cause inflammation in the brain when dysregulated. By cross-referencing with pharmaceutical databases, they found candidate drugs that could target these genes, with cholesterol-lowering drug simvastatin showing promise in reducing Parkinson’s disease diagnoses.

Dr. Cheng emphasized the urgency of finding new treatment options for Parkinson’s disease, as current management strategies only address symptoms but do not slow or stop disease progression. The research, supported by grants from the NIH, offers a faster and more efficient approach to identifying potential therapies, reducing the time and resources needed for drug development.

Moving forward, the team plans to further study the identified drugs in laboratory settings to determine their effectiveness in treating Parkinson’s disease. Their innovative approach to integrating genetic data with pharmaceutical information holds promise for accelerating the discovery of new treatments for this common neurodegenerative disorder.
