A recent law signed by President Joe Biden will benefit more than 39,000 Nevadans by increasing their Social Security payments. The Social Security Fairness Act, which went into effect on January 5th, eliminates the reduction of benefits for those who are entitled to public pensions not covered by Social Security. This law will also provide a lump-sum payment to nearly 2.5 million Americans to make up for the shortfall in benefits they should have received in 2024.
Nevada Representative Dina Titus, a cosponsor of the House legislation, stated that this law will give Nevada’s civil servants the full Social Security retirement benefits they have earned. The repeal of provisions like the Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision will ensure that public employees, including teachers and police officers, receive the benefits they deserve.
According to experts, this increase in Social Security payments will help retirees cover essential expenses like groceries and healthcare costs. The law aims to provide economic security and dignity to hardworking Americans who have earned their benefits through years of service.
The Social Security Administration is currently working on implementing the law, and beneficiaries do not need to take any action except to ensure their mailing address and direct deposit information is up to date. This legislation will provide much-needed relief to thousands of Nevadans and millions of Americans who rely on Social Security benefits for their retirement income.
