Immigration enforcement in Southern Nevada is on the rise, with federal agents arresting 956 people in a single day in major U.S. cities, according to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. While there have been no known activities in the Las Vegas Valley, organizations that help migrant clients are closely monitoring the situation, especially in neighboring states like California and Arizona.
The UNLV Immigration Clinic is advising the community not to panic and to have a plan in case of potential deportation. Director Michael Kagan cautioned that while some of the recent enforcement may be for show, there is concern about targeting individuals with no criminal records.
President Trump has stated that the roundups target those with criminal records, but nearly half of those detained reportedly do not have criminal records. Kagan stressed the importance of having access to necessary documents and being prepared in case of deportation.
Despite the increased visibility of immigration enforcement actions, Kagan noted that it does not necessarily mean there is an increase in activity. More information will be needed to determine the extent of the crackdown.
