Southern Nevada’s Annual Homelessness Count Postponed until 2026 due to Political and Governmental Factors

Clark County has announced that the annual census of Southern Nevada’s homeless population will not take place this year, but is scheduled to return in 2026. The census, known as the “Point in Time Count,” is undertaken by volunteers who tally the number of people living on the streets over a period of hours. The results are crucial for qualifying for federal grants and informing local governments about the state of homelessness and social services programs.

The decision to postpone the census was made by the Southern Nevada Continuum of Care’s board, with the next count scheduled for the last 10 days of January 2026. The county stated that the biennial approach offers advantages such as more time and resources for effective homeless intervention strategies.

The 2024 census revealed an increase in homelessness in Southern Nevada, with 7,906 sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons counted, marking a 20 percent increase over the previous year. The report attributed the rise to factors such as a shortage of affordable housing and systemic issues like rising inflation and stagnating wages.

Nationally, HUD reported a record high of 771,480 homeless Americans in 2024, with spikes among most demographics. However, there was an 8 percent decrease in the number of veterans experiencing homelessness, thanks to targeted social services.

Governor Joe Lombardo announced a $200 million public-private partnership to combat homelessness in Southern Nevada, with plans to build a transitional housing complex modeled after the “Haven for Hope” campus in San Antonio, Texas. The initiative aims to provide innovative, result-driven solutions to address the homelessness crisis in the region.
