Former UW-Whitewater student Chad T. Richards is facing trial for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Kara Welsh, a national champion gymnast at the university. Richards, who entered a not guilty plea during an arraignment in November, attended a status conference in January with his attorneys. A motion hearing is scheduled for February where legal and procedural issues will be discussed before the case moves forward.
Meanwhile, the UW-W gymnastics team honored Welsh’s memory during their first home meet of the season by wearing t-shirts and banners celebrating her legacy. Head coach Jennifer Regan dedicated the season to Welsh, and a scholarship in her name was created to support academic achievement. Welsh’s family was in attendance and received a certificate acknowledging her accomplishments.
The scholarship aims to raise $25,000 to become an endowment, with donations being accepted to reach that goal. As of January 21, the scholarship fund is halfway there. More information about Richards’ case will be shared soon.
The case has sparked interest and concern in the community as the legal proceedings continue. The gymnastics team’s tribute to Welsh reflects the impact she had on her teammates and the university as a whole. The upcoming motion hearing will provide an opportunity for both parties to present their arguments before the trial progresses further.
