ICE arrests nearly 1,200 individuals in a single day

Immigration authorities in the United States made close to 1,200 arrests in one day, with nearly half of those detained having no criminal records. Of the total arrests, 613 were considered criminal, while the rest were nonviolent offenders or individuals who had crossed the border without legal authorization. Eight of those arrested were categorized as “Worst Criminals Arrested,” including two gang members. At least 566 people had not committed any crimes and were only detained for lacking legal authorization to remain in the U.S.

Being undocumented is a civil offense, except for those who re-enter the country illegally after deportation. The Trump administration had promised to prioritize the detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants who have committed serious crimes, but the recent numbers call these promises into question. Collateral arrests of individuals without criminal records present during the raids were also reported.

The latest ICE data showed 853 detainers lodged for individuals arrested on other criminal charges, indicating potential deportation. Sanctuary cities do not take action on detainer requests. The administration plans to continue escalating immigration enforcement actions across the nation to target criminals and those illegally in the country. Gabe Gutierrez and Nicole Acevedo reported on the arrests, with contributions from Laura Strickler.
