Walmart and NFWF Renew Acres for America Program to Protect Wildlife and Public Spaces
Walmart and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) have unveiled a renewed commitment to their flagship Acres for America program with a substantial 10-year funding of $34.5 million. As the initiative celebrates its 20th anniversary, it proudly announces the protection of over 2 million acres of vital wildlife habitats across every state in the U.S., positioning it as one of the largest corporate conservation efforts in the country.
This year’s grant awards continue to make significant strides in wildlife preservation, highlighted by a conservation easement on a working ranch in Nevada’s Windermere Hills/Elko area. This easement will permanently protect 22,333 acres of essential sagebrush steppe, wet meadow, and native grasslands, providing a sanctuary for local wildlife including mule deer, elk, and pronghorn.
The Acres for America program is committed to not only safeguarding native wildlife populations but also ensuring the public can enjoy activities such as hunting, hiking, fishing, and birdwatching in these pristine environments. This dual focus fosters both habitat conservation and community recreation, delivering tangible benefits to local ecosystems and economies.
Remarkably, Acres for America has surpassed its initial goal of conserving an acre for every acre developed by Walmart, reflecting the company’s ongoing pledge to environmental stewardship. This renewal further solidifies Walmart’s support for initiatives that protect vital wildlife habitats while enhancing public access to nature, ultimately contributing to the long-term health of the environment and local communities. With its legacy of impactful grants and projects, the program stands as a testament to the positive changes that corporate partnerships can achieve in conservation efforts nationwide.
