Nevada City Launches Successful Inaugural Bike Bus Program for Kids
Last Friday marked a significant milestone for Nevada City as the community celebrated the inaugural ride of the Nevada City Bike Bus. This initiative, spearheaded by organizer Adrian Minty and supported by local families, encourages children to bike to school together. Starting at Pioneer Park’s Seaman’s Lodge at 7:20 a.m., the Bike Bus follows a route through town, with designated "bus stops" for additional riders along the way.
Minty, who also coaches the Seven Hills School Bike Club, reported a robust turnout, starting with ten kids and picking up several more at stops located at Sacramento and Prospect Streets, Three Forks Bakery, and Sacramento and Zion Streets. Local law enforcement provided safety by escorting the group, ensuring a secure and organized experience. Minty expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from both the Nevada City Police Department and Nevada City Probation Department, which are committed to helping with future rides.
Community interest has been enthusiastic, with local businesses offering assistance, including providing bikes for children in need and organizing cheers for participants. Feedback from the first ride was overwhelmingly positive, with kids leaving with smiles that lasted throughout the school day, sparking interest from their peers to join in next time.
Despite potential weather challenges as winter approaches, Minty remains optimistic about continuing the program, prioritizing safety while encouraging participation. With a short two-mile route through the town, the Bike Bus aims to foster a healthy, active lifestyle among local youth, garnering community support every step of the way. The Nevada City Bike Bus rides every Friday at 7:20 a.m., starting from Seaman’s Lodge. For up-to-date information, residents can follow the Nevada City Bike Bus on Facebook and Instagram.
