Nevada’s Final Push Against Vanderbilt Comes Up Short, Marking First Loss for Wolf Pack

Nevada Wolf Pack Falls to Vanderbilt in Charleston Classic Quarterfinals

In a thrilling quarterfinal at the Charleston Classic, the Nevada Wolf Pack faced the Vanderbilt Commodores, ultimately succumbing to a 73-71 defeat. This marked the first loss of the season for Nevada (4-1), following a string of four consecutive double-digit wins at home.

The game began favorably for the Wolf Pack, who jumped to a 12-3 lead while limiting Vanderbilt to just one basket in the opening stages. However, Vanderbilt responded strongly, maintaining an undefeated record and securing a spot in the tournament semifinals. With Nevada struggling to maintain momentum, they trailed 43-35 at halftime after a strong Commodore offensive run.

The second half saw a back-and-forth battle as Nevada fought to take the lead. They managed to close the gap to a single point after Tre Coleman made a layup, bringing the score to 67-66 with just over two minutes left. Despite their efforts, Nevada could not reclaim the lead. A missed 3-pointer from Kobe Sanders and subsequent turnovers prevented a comeback, even as Xavier DuSell hit a late three to narrow the deficit to 70-69.

Vanderbilt’s A.J. Hoggard led the way with a game-high 18 points, while key contributions from Jason Edwards and M.J. Collins helped secure their advance. The Wolf Pack struggled with ball control, committing 16 turnovers, a significant factor in the loss.

Next, Nevada faces VCU in the loser’s bracket on Friday at 4:30 PM Pacific, aiming to rebound from this setback. Meanwhile, Vanderbilt will meet Seton Hall in the semifinals as they continue to defy preseason expectations.
