Nevada State University in Henderson is eager to launch an athletics department that would be funded by a student fee if approved by the Nevada Board of Regents. The university believes that introducing sports programs will enhance the student experience, foster community engagement, and align with the state’s growing identity as a sports and entertainment hub. They are proposing a $9-per-credit-hour athletics fee to kick-start the program, starting with women’s flag football and men’s track and field.
The university argues that the program will address student demands for a more vibrant campus life, promote physical wellness, team spirit, and school pride. The fee is set to be voted upon at the upcoming Board of Regents meeting on Dec. 4-5, along with a separate fee request from the University of Nevada for an indoor practice facility.
With the rising popularity of women’s flag football in Southern Nevada and the absence of men’s track and field in the Division I athletic departments in the state, Nevada State University believes that introducing these sports will fill a void and further contribute to their growth. The university anticipates generating $648,000 in revenues with operating costs estimated at $540,000 for the athletics department. Student surveys have shown strong support for athletics and the athletics fee, indicating a positive response from the student body. The initiative aims to provide students with resources that support holistic wellness, physical education, and career opportunities in sports management and fitness fields.
