Former Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida has announced that he does not plan to return to Congress after withdrawing his name from consideration for President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general due to sexual misconduct allegations. Gaetz, who has been in elected office for 14 years, stated that he has other goals in life to pursue outside of Congress. He expressed excitement for the new representation that will come from his district in Northwest Florida. Gaetz also mentioned his continued support for President Trump without specifying his exact role. The House Ethics Committee had been investigating Gaetz over allegations of paying for sex with a minor and an adult woman at a party in 2017, but he denies these allegations. Despite Gaetz’s claims of innocence, his potential nomination for attorney general faced challenges due to the allegations. Gaetz resigned from Congress last week after Trump’s announcement of his intended nomination, and he is now focused on advocating for Trump from a different position outside of Congress.
