American Airlines recently introduced new technology at select airports in order to prevent “line-jumping” and premature boardings of flights. The new technology requires passengers to scan their boarding pass at a gate scanner, which will prompt an audible beep if it is not their turn to board. This allows airline staff to ensure that priority boarders are able to get on the plane more efficiently.
After receiving positive feedback from customers and employees at the initial airports, American Airlines has decided to roll out this new technology to over 100 more airports in the near future. While there is no definitive list of which airports will receive the technology, it has been confirmed that Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin will be included.
American Airlines Senior Vice President of Airport Operations, Julie Rath, expressed excitement about the new technology and its ability to improve the boarding process for passengers. The airline is aiming to have the technology implemented ahead of the busy Thanksgiving holiday season.
Currently, American Airlines has a detailed list of boarding groups, ranging from ConciergeKey members to Basic Economy passengers. Families with children under two are also given priority boarding. The new technology is expected to help streamline the boarding process, prevent crowding at the gate, and ensure that passengers board their flights in an orderly manner.
