Nevada and Vanderbilt Face Off in Charleston Classic Showdown
Charleston, SC – Unbeaten teams Nevada and Vanderbilt are set to clash in the Charleston Classic on Thursday evening, both eager to maintain their perfect records. Nevada has surged to a 4-0 start, winning all games by double digits, including a commanding 85-59 victory over Santa Clara last Saturday. The Wolf Pack showcased impressive teamwork with four players scoring in double figures, along with 18 assists and just 10 turnovers. “It’s a really good group to coach, and we’ve got a chance,” said Nevada coach Steve Alford. The team ranks second nationally in 3-point shooting at an impressive 48.6%, driven by standout performances from Nick Davidson (18 points, 8 rebounds per game) and Kobe Sanders (16.8 points, 4.8 assists).
Conversely, Vanderbilt (4-0) plays at a faster pace, characterized by a deep rotation with nine players logging substantial minutes. The Commodores also feature four players averaging double digits, led by Jason Edwards (17.5 points) and Devin McGlockton (16.0 points, 10 rebounds). On the defensive end, McGlockton’s rebounding prowess and Tyler Tanner’s stealing abilities have added to Vanderbilt’s success. Coach Mark Byington noted the team’s varied approaches to victories, emphasizing their improved ball movement.
The highly anticipated matchup marks the first meeting between the two teams, with the victor advancing to the tournament semifinals against either Seton Hall or VCU. This clash is part of an eight-team bracket that also features Miami, Drake, Oklahoma State, and Florida Atlantic. The game holds additional significance for Alford, as his victory over Santa Clara marked his 100th win at Nevada, making him one of only two coaches in Division I history to reach this milestone at four different schools.
