President-elect Donald Trump has secured a victory in Nevada over Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race, according to NBC News projections. Trump’s win marks a significant breakthrough for the GOP in a state that has been mostly dominated by Democrats in recent years.
Despite losing the state’s six electoral votes in his previous presidential runs, Trump has made significant strides with Latino voters and other key voting blocs in Nevada. His frequent campaign stops in Las Vegas and promotion of a “no tax on tips” pledge resonated with residents working in the entertainment and hospitality industries.
Harris, who also supported the “no tax on tips” proposal, made several visits to the state and earned the support of powerful groups like the Culinary Union. However, Trump’s victory in Nevada defied the traditional Democratic stronghold, with Republicans not winning the presidential contest in the state since 2004.
The 2024 election in Nevada was not without controversy, as six Republican “fake electors” were indicted on forgery charges for allegedly submitting fake certificates to Congress declaring Trump the winner in the state in 2020. The case was dismissed by a judge in June 2024, but Nevada’s attorney general, Democrat Aaron Ford, appealed the ruling.
Despite Trump and Republican allies criticizing mail-in voting, the party made a concerted effort to encourage voters to utilize mail balloting in Nevada. Trump urged his supporters to cast their ballots in any way possible, leading to his victory in the state.
