Power Restoration Update: NV Energy Works to Mitigate Storm Impact
November 20, 2024 – After a series of Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSOM) prompted by hurricane-level winds across Northern Nevada, most NV Energy customers have had their power restored. As of Wednesday evening, a small group of 42 customers in the Genoa North, Clear Creek, and Jacks Valley areas remain without power, and restoration is expected by Thursday morning.
The PSOM was implemented early Wednesday, affecting over 10,000 customers as a precaution against wildfire risks associated with strong winds. The outages, initiated around 4:30 a.m., spanned several zones, including Virginia City Highlands and Southwest Reno. Many schools, including those in the Carson City School District, were affected, with classes canceled at Bordewich Bray Elementary and Carson Middle School.
NV Energy crews commenced inspections of power lines Wednesday afternoon, and restoration efforts have been underway since then. However, customers in the Verdi area are still under a warning status, with potential shutoffs remaining a possibility if conditions worsen.
For residents needing assistance, Douglas County has set up a warming center at the Community & Senior Center in Gardnerville, and a range of local resorts, including Peppermill and Eldorado, are providing special rates for affected residents.
In an advisory regarding food safety, Northern Nevada Public Health recommends that refrigerated items may not be safe after extended power loss.
For ongoing information about PSOM updates, safety tips, and preparedness, residents are encouraged to visit NV Energy’s official website.
The utility company’s proactive measures aim to safeguard the community amid challenging weather conditions, underscoring the importance of safety in power management.
