Press Release: Groundbreaking Ceremony for Affordable Senior Housing at Sparks Marina
SPARKS, Nev. (KOLO) — Last week, a significant milestone was reached as construction commenced on a new affordable senior housing development, The Afton at Sparks Marina, designed for residents aged 62 and older. The 142-unit complex will cater to individuals and families earning 80 percent or less of the area’s median income, providing much-needed housing options for seniors in the Sparks community.
Located at 1275 E. Prater Way, near Northern Nevada Medical Center, the three-story building will feature a range of amenities including a clubhouse, fitness center, valet trash services, and covered parking. This initiative is particularly noteworthy as it progresses without federal funding, thanks to the substantial investment from the Call to Action Foundation and support from the Nevada Housing Division.
The Call to Action Foundation, a private operating entity aimed at improving access to affordable housing for working families and seniors, has invested over $80 million since 2022 to create and maintain safe housing in the West and Midwest. Drew Maggelet, the foundation’s director of housing, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are honored to be part of a project that will make a real difference in the lives of seniors in the Sparks community. This development not only provides safe, affordable housing but it does so in a location that offers easy access to amenities that support healthy, active aging.”
Metcalf Builders of Reno has been contracted to oversee the construction of The Afton, which aims to enhance the quality of life for seniors in the area. As this project unfolds, it promises to serve a vital role in addressing the housing needs of the senior population in Sparks.
