Press Article: Nevada Election Certification Meeting Faces Conspiracy Theories Amid Trump Victory

Las Vegas, NV – Nevada’s election certification meetings on Friday were marked by heated debates and unfounded conspiracy theories, particularly in the populous counties of Clark and Washoe. With a deadline to finalize election results looming, all 17 counties successfully submitted their outcomes for final approval by Democratic Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar and the Nevada Supreme Court later this month. Losing candidates have until November 20 to request a recount.

President-elect Donald Trump secured a win in Nevada, dominating the state’s 15 rural counties, where local officials unanimously certified the results. These small counties lauded the smooth administration of the election. However, certification in Clark County, home to Las Vegas, and Washoe County, which includes Reno, evoked memories of the contentious 2020 certification process.

In Washoe County, officials voted 3-1 to certify the election after enduring over two hours of incendiary public commentary filled with baseless claims of ballot security breaches and hacking threats. Commissioner Jeanne Herman, the dissenting vote, has consistently opposed certification processes since 2020, advocating for a return to hand-counted paper ballots.

Contrastingly, Clark County’s commissioners faced a similar public outcry but nonetheless voted unanimously to certify their results. Despite concerns raised by attendees about alleged election fraud, Lorena Portillo, Clark County’s top election official, reported the discovery of 1,600 processed ballots that had not been counted. These ballots were eventually included, but they did not alter the electoral outcomes. An ensuing audit is set to follow this revelation.

As Nevada’s certification processes continue amid allegations and conspiracy-fueled discussions, officials remain firm in their commitment to uphold the integrity of the election results.
