Bela Karolyi, a prominent gymnastics coach in the United States, has passed away at the age of 82. Alongside his wife Márta, Karolyi played a key role in developing USA Gymnastics into an international powerhouse from the 1980s through the 2010s. The couple helped launch the careers of numerous gymnasts, including Mary Lou Retton, who became the first American woman to win an Olympic individual all-around gold medal in 1984. Retton, who was initially skeptical of the Karolyi program, described her experience as a learning opportunity that ultimately led to her success.
The Karolyis defected from Romania in 1981 during a U.S. exhibition tour, eventually settling in Houston where they established a gym that attracted top American gymnasts. Bela served as the national team coordinator until 2001, with Márta taking over the role until her retirement in 2016, including work with gymnastics superstar Simone Biles.
Nadia Comăneci, another gymnastics legend mentored by the Karolyis, paid tribute to Bela’s impact and influence on her life. The couple’s legacy in the sport is marked by their dedication to developing elite gymnasts and shaping the landscape of USA Gymnastics. Bela Karolyi’s passing marks the end of an era in American gymnastics, with his contributions to the sport leaving a lasting impact on athletes and fans alike.
