More than half of Senate Republicans, including some in senior leadership positions, do not see a path for former Rep. Matt Gaetz to be confirmed as attorney general and would not support him to lead the Department of Justice, according to sources. Despite Senate Republicans opposing Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump’s team remains confident he will eventually be confirmed. Gaetz and Trump attorney Todd Blanche are working on plans for the Justice Department. Some Republicans estimate that close to 30 senators consider Gaetz unqualified. Gaetz has faced controversy in the past, including being investigated for the alleged sex trafficking of a minor, which he vehemently denies. The House Ethics Committee has been investigating Gaetz, with some Republican senators wanting to review the committee’s report before a confirmation vote. Some Republicans have raised concerns about Gaetz’s potential confirmation in the Senate. Trump previously suggested the use of recess appointments to quickly confirm Cabinet members, but has not specifically requested Gaetz’s confirmation this way. The potential appointment of Gaetz as attorney general continues to be met with resistance from some Senate Republicans.
