A 44-year-old woman in Florida was charged with filing a false public assistance claim after using her mother’s identity to apply for hurricane aid. Veronica Torres received almost $8,000 using her mother’s ID, name, and social security number, falsely claiming that she had to move out of her home due to hurricane damage. When she went to pick up the check, a city employee confronted her about her youthful appearance compared to the age listed on the application. Torres claimed it was due to botox treatments, but was asked to return the next day and was subsequently arrested. She posted $2,500 bond and was released. It is unclear if she has an attorney representing her. The incident took place in Bradenton, a city on Florida’s western coast that was impacted by Hurricane Helene in September and Hurricane Milton in October. The case did not appear in online court records as of Saturday.
