New Study Shows Only 21% of Organizations Acknowledge Technology’s Impact on Sustainability, According to Kyndryl and Microsoft

A recent study by Kyndryl and Microsoft has found that while the majority of organizations place high strategic importance on achieving sustainability goals, only a small percentage are using technology to reduce their environmental footprint and shape their overall sustainability strategy. The study reveals that only 21% of organizations are utilizing technology to help achieve their sustainability goals.

Artificial intelligence is expected to have a significant impact on sustainability efforts, with 55% of organizations believing it will play a key role in achieving their sustainability goals. However, many organizations are limiting their AI initiatives to analyzing historical data for monitoring and reporting, rather than using AI to drive operational efficiencies and foster sustainable innovations.

The study highlights that data integration and management across enterprise planning systems is a key challenge for organizations looking to leverage technology for sustainability. By effectively integrating data, organizations can gain a better understanding of their environmental impact and make more informed sustainability decisions.

Furthermore, while the benefits of AI for sustainability are becoming more recognized, the study indicates that only 35% of organizations are considering the energy implications of their AI solutions. Despite this, leaders are increasingly recognizing the benefits of sustainability initiatives for their organizations, with 38% of organizations ramping up their sustainability goals and programs since 2023.

In conclusion, the study stresses the importance of integrating technology into sustainability strategies to turn goals into actionable, data-driven plans. By leveraging technology and data effectively, organizations can make significant strides in achieving their sustainability goals and reducing their environmental impact.
