Samsung Display, a leading technology company, has recently unveiled a groundbreaking quantum dot ink recycling technology that promises to revolutionize the manufacturing process for its quantum dot (QD)-OLED displays. This innovative technology allows for the collection and recycling of QD ink that would otherwise be wasted during production, with the ability to recover and reprocess up to 80% of the unused ink. The company estimates annual savings of over KRW 10 billion ($7.2 million) as a result of this eco-friendly initiative.

In the manufacturing of QD-OLED displays, the QD light-emitting layer is crucial and is created using an inkjet printing process. Previously, any leftover QD ink was discarded, accounting for approximately 20% of the total ink used. However, Samsung Display’s new process regenerates the ink through advanced synthesis technology, restoring its purity and optical properties to match those of the original ink. The company has already implemented this process in its production lines and plans to further enhance its competitiveness in QD-OLED manufacturing by improving equipment performance and process capabilities.

By adopting this cutting-edge technology, Samsung Display aims to reduce waste, increase efficiency, and ultimately enhance the quality of its QD-OLED displays. This major development underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the rapidly evolving technology industry.
