Questions about nuisance ordinance in Nevada City diminish as there are no malicious intentions involved

Nevada City – The ongoing discussions around what constitutes a nuisance within the city limits of Nevada City have been a hot topic among residents, council members, and City staff. Despite initial outrage from the public through letters, emails, and public comments, only six people attended a workshop at City Hall on Monday to gather input on potential changes to the nuisance ordinance.

Residents were concerned that updates to the ordinance would strip away the unique character of Nevada City and turn it into a sterile “Disneyland.” Some objected to subjective judgment changes that could impact art in public view or the maintenance of holiday lights.

The lack of attendance at Monday’s workshop signaled a potential resolution to residents’ concerns, as the effort to gather public input and make changes to the ordinance may be nearing completion. Councilmember Daniela Fernandez assured attendees that the process was not rushed and had been ongoing for several months with multiple meetings dedicated to the ordinance review.

City Manager Sean Grayson introduced ten proposed changes to the ordinance, which focused on addressing necessary dangerous scenarios like unsecured pools and abandoned appliances. However, confusion persisted among attendees regarding what had already been changed in the ordinance and what was still being considered.

Overall, the workshop highlighted frustrations with the notification process, website accessibility, and the timeline for potential ordinance changes. Four items were subsequently removed from the original ordinance, including prohibitions on clotheslines and playground equipment in view from the street. The ongoing dialogue between city officials and residents demonstrates a commitment to balancing community concerns with the need for necessary updates to the nuisance ordinance.
