Nevada Survey Reveals Consensus on Major Policy Issues in Swing States

A recent survey conducted by the University of Maryland’s Program for Public Consultation found that despite the divisive rhetoric surrounding the upcoming Nov. 5 election, there is a surprising amount of agreement on policy positions between Republicans and Democrats in swing states like Nevada. The survey, which asked respondents about real policy proposals, presented arguments for and against, and allowed for recommendations from a policy maker’s perspective, revealed agreement on over 50 policy positions.

One area of common ground in Nevada was housing policy, with majority support for measures like providing funding to build or repair homes for low-income households, down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers, and policies on corporate landlords. Similarly, support was strong for policies related to children and families, including federal tax credits for parents and funding for universal preschool.

On controversial topics like abortion and birth control, respondents in battleground states opposed making abortion a crime and supported federal policies on access to birth control and education. In Nevada, there was also broad support for a path to citizenship for immigrants without legal status and policies on health care like capping drug prices and permanent Affordable Care Act subsidies.

The survey also found agreement on international policy issues like collective security, NATO membership, military aid to Ukraine, and tariffs. In addition, respondents supported measures to address the Social Security Trust Fund’s shortfall, prohibit stock trading by certain government officials, and maintain tax credits for electric vehicles while opposing offshore drilling.

Overall, the survey revealed a surprising level of agreement on a variety of policy positions among Nevada residents across party lines, challenging the notion of deep political division in the state.
