Exploring the progress on RSCVA’s $5 million indoor track: A behind-the-scenes look at its state-of-the-art features

Reno, also known as the Biggest Little City, is set to welcome a groundbreaking $5 million indoor track and field facility in December, thanks to the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority. This project marks a significant milestone for the city, as it has been nearly 17 years since the Bill Cosby indoor track facility was closed at the Livestock Events Center. The new facility features a state-of-the-art track imported from Italy by the brand “Mondo.”

The project, which took over 2.5 years to complete, was approved by the RSCVA board in June 2023. The track is expected to bring in numerous benefits to the city, including increased tourism, room nights, and economic impact. Donnie Nelson, the former captain of the Nevada men’s track and field team and now the RSCVA’s track and field specialist, expressed his excitement and stressed the city’s history with track and field.

The track was built in Italy and then shipped to Reno, with roughly 1,600 hours spent on its construction. Six workers from Italy flew to Reno to assist with the assembly of the track, which is set to debut with the Silver State Invitational hosted by Nevada athletics in December. The facility will accommodate various levels of track and field competitions, from youth to masters, making Reno a prominent destination for the sport.

The RSCVA is optimistic about the potential of hosting high-profile meets in the future, such as the NCAA Championships. The indoor track is expected to significantly boost tourism and generate tax revenue for the city from November through March. With a capacity of 1,200 spectators, the track is poised to become a premier venue for track and field events in the West.
