Edward Kelley, a Donald Trump supporter, is facing charges for plotting to kill FBI special agents investigating him for his involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot. Kelley, along with co-defendant Austin Carter, were allegedly planning to murder FBI employees in December 2022. Kelley has been held in pre-trial custody since December after being re-arrested for the murder plot. He is also facing charges related to his actions during the Capitol riot, including civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding, and destruction of government property. Federal prosecutors presented evidence that Kelley may have been armed during the riot, wearing an inside waistband gun holster. Witnesses testified that Kelley purchased ammunition and gas masks leading up to the attack, and images showed him wearing what appeared to be an ammo pack on his hip. Kelley was seen pointing at Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman during the riot and took selfies inside the Senate chamber. Prosecutors argued that Kelley needed to be held accountable for his actions on January 6, which resulted in the breach of the Capitol for the first time since 1814. More than 1,500 people have been charged in connection with the riot, with over 1,100 convictions and more than 600 defendants serving varying sentences in federal prison.
