Californians travel to Nevada and Arizona to campaign for Harris

Former LAX cashier, Laura Banuet, was motivated by the Supreme Court’s decision to end federal protection of abortion to make a difference in Arizona. Banuet is among roughly 300 Californians canvassing in Arizona to support Democratic candidates, including Kamala Harris, and encouraging voters to support a state constitutional amendment to allow abortion up to the point of fetal viability. The efforts are led by Unite Here Local 11, a union representing hospitality workers. The campaign focuses on low-propensity voters of color and suburbanites.

Californians like Paloma Corona and Shemika Pecot are volunteering in Arizona and Nevada to support Harris’ campaign in states where her victory isn’t as assured as in California. The efforts are organized by the Harris campaign, labor unions, and the Black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha. Trump supporters in California also reach out to voters in swing states, but there is less visible public presence of California Republicans attempting to sway voters in person.

In Arizona, canvassers like former hotel bartender Jose Manuel Cahuantzi are faced with mixed reactions from voters, ranging from disdain to full support. Despite differing opinions, the canvassers continue to engage with voters in hopes of making a difference in the tight presidential contest and U.S. Senate races that could determine control of the Senate. The on-the-ground efforts in Arizona are crucial as volunteers from California and other states pour into the battleground locations to influence the outcome of the upcoming election.
