New LGBTQ+ Bar, Dani’s, Opens in Boston, Marking the Return of a Lesbian Bar to Beantown

Dani’s Queer Bar is the first lesbian bar to open in Boston in decades, marking a resurgence in dedicated spaces for queer women across the country. Founder Thais Rocha’s vision for Dani’s as a “space for Sapphic, trans and non-binary community members” was realized after a two-year fundraising campaign and support from Mayor Michelle Wu’s Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion. The bar officially opened its doors on Sept. 12, 2022, aiming to fill a gap in the Boston LGBTQ community.

The opening of Dani’s has been met with excitement and relief by patrons like Stevie Dickie and Renee Gannon, who appreciated the sense of community and inclusivity the bar provides. Before Dani’s, Boston had been without a dedicated lesbian bar for at least two decades, highlighting a trend of declining lesbian-focused spaces nationwide due to factors like gentrification and financial challenges.

However, there has been a recent uptick in new Sapphic spaces opening since 2020, signaling a renewed interest in creating safe and welcoming environments for queer women. The importance of these spaces as shelters for LGBTQ individuals and places to build friendships is emphasized by advocates like Erica Rose. Kristen Porter, a leader in Boston’s lesbian community, sees Dani’s Queer Bar as a significant step forward in providing a permanent venue for LGBTQ patrons to connect and celebrate their identities.

Overall, Dani’s serves as a beacon of hope for the LGBTQ community in Boston, offering a dedicated space for queer women, trans, and non-binary individuals to gather, socialize, and form bonds in a supportive environment.
