The war in Ukraine continues to escalate as it enters its 950th day, with ongoing fighting and political developments. In the southern city of Kherson, at least six people were killed and three injured by Russian artillery fire, while six more were injured at a city bus stop. In the Zaporizhia region, one person was killed and 32 injured by Russian aerial bombs. Ukraine’s military shot down 29 out of 32 Iranian-made drones launched in a Russian attack. Russian troops have reached the center of Vuhledar in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. Ukraine held a nationwide moment of silence on Defenders Day to honor war dead.
The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission reported pervasive Russian torture and mistreatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General is investigating the killing of 16 Ukrainian POWs by Russian forces. Russia detained 39 people, including teenagers, for allegedly backing “Ukrainian terrorist” groups. Three journalists were released after being detained by Russia for attending an event marking the annexation of Ukrainian regions. NATO’s new Secretary-General, Mark Rutte, has made Ukraine his top priority.
