Ukrainian organisation Wild Hornets is working to enhance the country’s drone capabilities in response to Russia’s invasion. The organisation, formed by volunteers and veterans, has been instrumental in developing drones equipped with thermite to combat Russian military targets. These drones, ranging from small commercial models to larger UAVs, have played a key role in countering Russian forces on the battlefield.
The Wild Hornets began as a drone fundraiser initiated by Ivan, who had no prior experience in drone manufacturing. Teaming up with engineers, they have produced various drones, including the “Standard Wild Hornets” model and “Queen Hornet” model, which can carry bombs and achieve high speeds. These drones have been used not only for combat purposes but also for logistical operations, such as supplying food deliveries to front line areas.
Utilizing artificial intelligence, the Wild Hornets have developed drones equipped with a neural system that can detect and engage targets autonomously. However, due to the complexity of drones and their potential to cause unintended damage, human operators are still needed to make critical decisions. Despite challenges in sourcing components domestically, the Wild Hornets have made strides towards self-sufficiency in drone manufacturing.
As the conflict in Ukraine intensifies, the role of drones in warfare continues to evolve. Ivan and Vyacheslav emphasize the importance of adapting military strategies to counter the use of drones by opposing forces. They believe that drones can compensate for a lack of air defense and play a crucial role in both offensive and defensive operations on the battlefield. Ultimately, the future of warfare lies in the integration of artificial intelligence and robotics, transforming how conflicts are waged on the modern battlefield.
